There is a legend that tells of a statue of a "Madonna and
Child" that was offered to our village in the Middle Ages by
a group of Syrian sailors who escaped from a shipwreck on the Mediterranean.
Since that time, the Ancient, Miraculous Virgin has
continued to watch over Vias and its inhabitants throughout the
trials and tribulations of its history. On 28 May 2000, having been
restored, the statue returned by sea to Farinette beach. To mark
the occasion, a large number of Vias inhabitants took part
in a pilgrimage and mass.
The
people of Vias would not miss their carnival for anything! This
traditionally takes place in February, and the merry-making goes
on all day.
